Bruno Bettelheim (1904-1990) was an Austrian-American child psychologist and educator. He is best known for his controversial theories on autism, as well as for his work at the Orthogenic School at the University of Chicago, where he served as the director from 1944 to 1973.
Bettelheim was born in Vienna, Austria in 1904 and studied philosophy at the University of Vienna before earning a doctorate in art history in 1929. He worked as a psychoanalyst in Vienna before fleeing to the United States in 1939, due to the rise of Nazism in Austria.
Bettelheim is best known for his work with emotionally disturbed children, which he began in 1946 at the University of Chicago’s Orthogenic School.
His most famous book, The Uses of Enchantment: The Meaning and Importance of Fairy Tales (1976), analyzed the symbolic meanings of fairy tales and their psychological effects on children. He also wrote many other works that explored childhood education and psychology.
In addition to his work with emotionally disturbed children, Bettelheim is remembered for his controversial theories on autism spectrum disorder. He argued that autism was caused by “refrigerator mothers” who failed to provide emotional warmth to their children.
His views were criticized by many experts and have since been largely discredited.
